Subject: [CASL-L] This Week in CT Libraries: 3.24.25
Good Morning CT Libraries, here is what is going on this week.
CLC HAPPENINGS
There are no roundtables this week…weird. But, with all that extra time you have, maybe you want to check out our newly reorganized webpage on digital resource discounts. There is a lot there but we hope this new organization makes it easier for you to find exactly what you’re looking for.
And the CLC Board of Trustees meets on Thursday.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
eBooks
- No updates on HB 6958 or S.B. 1234. Both have been voted out of committee. So, either one of them – or theoretically both of them – could advance to a full vote in either chamber.
Freedom to Read
- No updates on SB 1271. The new bill language still hasn’t been posted.
- HB 7014 was voted out of committee on Friday. You can watch the committee meeting here. I dare say it was a more thoughtful discussion.
NEWS OF NOTE
The Board of the Kent Memorial Library in Suffield has proposed a controversial Youth Collection and Acquisition Policy. The meeting was supposed to be on Thursday but it was canceled because too many people showed up and the room was over capacity. And here. And here.
Flying blind every day, CT Libraries and Museums grapple with cuts to federal agencies. And
Trumps targeting of little known federal agency could impact arts and culture organizations (and libraries)
Bridget Quinn, CEO of the Hartford Public Library, is named 2025 Person of the Year for the Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Also at HPL, a $12K grant will fund a summer concert series.
Danbury Library imagines a building beyond books in new strategic planning efforts.
Drop me a line if you or your library is in the news and I’ve missed it!
Have a good week,
Ellen

Subject: [CASL-L] AI tool for plagiarism detectionColleagues--I know that at the secondary level we are all struggling with AI detection on assignments, so I figured I'd share this tool that I knew about, but didn't know how it can inspect activity on a document. (Our district won't pay for Draftback, which used to do this.) Here's the email I sent our teachers:Teachers--Did you know that you can use the free Chrome extension Brisk to inspect student writing? It will show you how many pastes, edits, and all the timestamps and activity on a Google Doc. https://youtu.be/y1KKdgdOjeg?si=3Htqu7b14_7NSoZESign up for Brisk, with the Free Educator plan, and download the Chrome extension where it says "Add to Chrome For Free". It will put a little B symbol in the corner of your screen on webpages and Google Docs. If you are on a Google Doc, click the little B and choose "Inspect Writing".Brisk can do a lot of other things too--like change the level of a text or create a quiz from an article in a snap! Try it out!--Casey LaPlanteLibrary Media SpecialistGranby Memorial High SchoolGranby, CT![]()

Subject: [CASL-L] AI / Academic Integrity policy_______________________________________________Hi! Does anyone have an AI policy or an Academic Integrity Policy that includes AI that they are willing to share? We are looking at updating ours and want to include specific steps for teachers to go through including correspondence templates to students and families. I am also wondering if anyone keeps track (and how) at your schools so teachers know if this is a first, second or twentieth use of AI in their classes.THANK YOU!Kathleen Currie SmithLibrary Media SpecialistLedyard High School24 Gallup Hill Road, Ledyard, CT 06339860.464.9600
