Our SDMS (Wethersfield) policy requires teachers to speak to the student, notify parents, and log it in PowerSchool so administration sees it. Theoretically, this should let office or anyone who has the student see it in log entries. Repeated instances are supposed to have disciplinary consequences.

Having said that, I’ve been spending time with our seventh grade students recently, talking about AI and academic dishonesty, and having them look at some scenarios as well as discuss the pros and cons of AI, show examples of AI bias and misinformation, emphasize the importance of their own writing voice, and remind them that they should check with the teacher as to whether or not AI is allowed or not allowed. I also talk to them briefly about Connecticut’s privacy law and not just signing up for stuff/AI tools with their school Gmail. Like many of you, I was getting a lot of phone calls or emails from teachers asking about how to check for AI (have shown many of them Brisk Inspect writing, too) and decided it was best to just address the topic head on with the students. We’ve had some good discussions -and now, if it happens, we can tell parents that we have had conversations around this prior to work being submitted.
Thanks so much to Shannon McNiece in West Hartford for the inspiration and ideas for this work.
While AI is blocked for our students at school, we are trying out Magic School (the student piece where teachers launch a classroom) in a few areas in 7th grade right now -the “debate partner” in English to help students develop counterclaims in argument writing-and in science to help students improve their CER’s. We’ll see how it goes…
Interesting times- it’s a brave new world!

Here's what we drafted as our stance on AI. We didn't make a new policy, per se, since we have an acceptable use policy and an academic integrity policy already that cover cheating, plagiarism, and unacceptable use of technology. That being said, the tracking idea is interesting since it's happening constantly in all disciplines.

Hi! Does anyone have an AI policy or an Academic Integrity Policy that includes AI that they are willing to share? We are looking at updating ours and want to include specific steps for teachers to go through including correspondence templates to students and families. I am also wondering if anyone keeps track (and how) at your schools so teachers know if this is a first, second or twentieth use of AI in their classes.
THANK YOU!
