We had our carpet replaced - our shelves are not on wheels either. They actually installed the carpet around the existing shelves (the carpet type they installed comes in plank-style strips).

That being said, when we rearranged our shelves many years ago I tried to do it with helpers - there are no words to describe how time-consuming it was. Our district generously agreed to hire a company that is in the business of moving libraries (not sure of the name), and they came in and knocked it out quickly. If you go that route, label everything VERY clearly. They did a good job, but there was a decent amount of "fixing" involved after the move. Overall, it was an incredible time-saver.

Best of luck!!

Subject: Re: [CASL-L] ReCarpeting Help
We had a company do it for my 13,000ish items before new carpet. I don't know how long it took them to pack the books up because they did it in the summer and I was not even in town to be able to oversee what was happening, but I know they had a crew of multiple people- maybe it was 4 or 5. They put books back wrong and we had to fix that and it took like a week just to try to fix everything. If you have a week and several people, I think you can do it if you're fully prepared ahead of time. best thing to do is label each shelf and start with something like A1, A2, A3, etc and then B1, B2, B3, etc. This means that someone who doesn't understand shelving can at least understand that the books on shelf A1 go in the boxes labeled A1. It won't keep them in perfect order, but you can get them packed up quickly. The unboxing will take longer in my experience and will require time to reorder each shelf.

Hope that is helpful.

Good morning!

I was told we might be getting new carpet in my small high school library this summer if it’s in the budget. While that’s amazing, it would involve boxing up every book in the library in order to remove all the shelves (none of our shelves are on wheels) since the carpet goes underneath them. I have study halls assigned to the library all day. I’ve been told that I will have only 3.5 work days to box my 10,000+ books/items and “volunteers” who will help. These 3.5 work days include graduation in the afternoon. So for those of you who have had to box up everything and either move or renovate, how much time did it take you? I’m trying to convince my principal that I need to close the library at least during finals, which would give me a week and a half (the only students in the space would be those not in exams AND after exams for study sessions led by NHS), but I’m worried even that would not be enough time.

And this summer I’m NOT coming in even for pay. It’s been a CRAZY year (092 internship) and I cannot do it to myself.

So I need advice; please help!
Liz

Subject: [CASL-L] Next Week is CT Saves Week!

April is Financial Literacy Month and Next Week is America Saves / Connecticut Saves Week

Coming up next week….

Keep an eye out next week on our social media for daily savings tips to share with your communities.

For more than 10 years, the Connecticut State Library (CSL) has been a proud member of the CT Saves group along with UConn Extension, the CT Department of Banking, Better Business Bureau, Chelsea Groton Bank, Asset Building (formerly CAHS), and other partners. CSL will be promoting financial literacy with its partners in a lunchtime learning presentation for University of New Haven students on Monday and an in-person financial fair for UConn Hartford students on Tuesday.

Visit the America Saves website to sign your library up to be an America Saves participant, access a financial literacy toolkit, find ideas to share for the week, and promote the CT Saves Pledge, a self-pledge to yourself to save to meet your financial goals. Studies show that if you write something down rather than just saying it, that you are more likely to DO it!

Visit the DLD Financial Literacy libguide for other ideas, put together an adult book display of your financial titles, or incorporate some picture books from the Money as You Grow bookshelf list into your storytimes!  Promote something for all ages this month!

For any questions, please contact Gail Hurley at Gail.Hurley@ct.gov or
