Librarians, advocates, and allies—we need your voice now. CT's Library Freedom to Read Act (SB 1271) is ready to move forward, but it needs to be called to the floor for a vote.

Contact your CT State Representative and Senator today and ask them to support SB 1271 and to urge leadership to call it to the floor.

This bill is more urgent than ever. On May 24, 2025, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a devastating ruling in a 10–7 decision that threatens the very foundation of intellectual freedom in public libraries. The court declared that public library patrons have no First Amendment right to access books—and that library collection decisions can be based solely on viewpoint discrimination, immune from constitutional scrutiny.

This ruling paves the way for government censorship of library collections and undermines decades of precedent protecting the freedom to read. Connecticut must take a stand. SB 1271 is our chance to proactively affirm the rights of readers and protect our libraries from similar attacks.

Here's what you can do today:

  1. Find your legislators at:

  2. Call or email them today. It's OK to keep it brief!
  3. Urge them to support SB 1271 and to ask leadership to call it to the floor for a vote.

Libraries are not political battlegrounds—they are community anchors grounded in access, equity, and the freedom to read.

Let’s make sure Connecticut stays that way.
