Hi Michelle,

I do an adaptive library class as well. I go into the classroom (students are in grades K-4). I think that what you do really depends on the students in the room. I think that what you did is perfect - it's so helpful to check with the teacher regarding student goals.

I typically do a short 15-20 minute session with just book checkout (choosing from pre-selected books), and a read aloud. Again, it really depends on the students. In previous years, some classes have included related hands-on activities.

In the past, I have also collaborated with the music teacher. We combined our classes into one 20 minute session with a hello song, a music activity, a story, and a goodbye song.

I hope this helps!

Hi everyone - I neglected to add a couple of things. My apologies!

1) The FORM to fill out if you are interested.

2) The total cost is $190 - CASL will pay half. You or your district are responsible for the other half.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Are you interested in Project Look Sharp? Need a little incentive?

CASL is pleased to announce a grant opportunity to help three current CASL members to virtually attend Project Look Sharp. CASL will pay $95 toward the registration fee. Fill out this form by September 19, 2025. You will be notified by Sept. 22 if you are a recipient.

Please Note: Only available to those who have not been a recipient of a CASL mini grant in the past fiscal year (school year 24-25), ie. ISTE Grant, Let Them Book Club, AI Micro Credential. CASL has discretion to change this depending on enrollment.

From Project Look Sharp:

How do we give all or our students the habits of critical thinking about all media messages that will prepare them for life in an infodemic?

The 2-year ML3 partnership between AASL and the media literacy organization, Project Look Sharp, has developed an online PD course designed to support librarians as leaders of media literacy in their schools/districts. The 9 week online course, Empowering all Students Through Media Decoding gives participants the inspiration, knowledge, resources, and practice to integrate question-based, student-centered, curriculum driven media analysis into their work with students and/or other educators.

The 15 hour course includes 4 self-paced modules with engaging activities, videos, readings, and reflections.  The course begins and ends with 90 minute live online session and includes the crafting of individual activity plans, sharing and responding to peers, and individual coaching.

Watch this short video or see the brochure for the National CMD Course that runs October 7, to December 9, 2025. For more information and to register email looksharp@ithaca.eduDo not register until you have been notified- if you are selected, CASL will reimburse you.

Subject: [CASL-L] Adaptive Library Class
Hi everyone,
This year I have adaptive library classes for K &1, and 2 & 3. I will be going down to their classrooms so as to avoid transitions and the overstimulation that the library can bring. I was wondering if anyone has done this or anything similar? I have not worked with this population before and would appreciate any tips and guidance. I spoke with the teacher and she gave me some broad ideas, but if anyone has a specific routine that would be a big help.
Thank you!
-Michelle Farella
