I bought hi-lo readers from Orca that worked pretty well. I think the cover illustrations are more appealing than they used to be.

-About a second/early third grade level
-Interesting for an eighth grade boy
-cover that doesn't look ancient or really young

I tried him in a book that's about middle of third grade and it's too challenging for him.
