 MOTM BREAKING NEWS: MOTM 2023 SITE UPDATE



(This announcement is being made later today on social media and in the near future in an email blast to MOTM registrants and recent attendees.)



Meeting of the Minds 2023 will take place in a city other than Key West for the first time since 1997. The MOTM Site Committee, with the approval of the PHIP Board of Directors has now officially determined that Key West will not be the host city for MOTM 2023. The inquiry into alternate locations became necessary when Casa Marina Resort announced early this year that it is undergoing a major renovation, which the resort agreed to delay until after this year’s event. As details about the renovation have evolved, it is apparent that the planned changes to the grounds would make it physically impractical to hold Meeting of the Minds at the location in future years even if the economic obstacles could be overcome. The Committee has researched other potential venues and determined that no other venue in Key West is suitable for producing Meeting of the Minds without fundamentally changing the nature of the event.



A change in the basic structure of the event is possible, and thus a return to Key West for MOTM at some point is not out of the question. Nonetheless, the wise planning parrot head would take note: Meeting of the Minds will definitely be held elsewhere, certainly in 2023, most likely in 2024, perhaps indefinitely. If you are a MOTM Bucket Lister who’s never pulled the trigger, or a long-time attendee wanting to be part of the last licks in Key West, this is your year.



The PHIP Board had directed the Committee to prioritize keeping the event in Key West if practical. Multiple alternate “main event” sites were considered and researched, all of which were deemed unsuitable. This was in addition to challenges presented by the spike in lodging costs in the area, a concern listed as a top priority in our membership survey. These logistical, economic and other factors led to the decision to eliminate Key West from consideration as a 2023 host.



There are several cities under consideration for 2023 and 2024. At this point, the Board expects to announce by early September the selection for the 2023 event, which is likely to be a commitment for a single year only. The cities remaining in the mix for 2023 include Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, Alabama, and Punta Gorda and Fort Myers Beach, Florida. MOTM Site Committee members are conducting site visits and meetings in the next two weeks to make final determinations for recommendations to the Board.
