[MCOH-EH] Substance Abuse Policy

It couldn't hurt. But when union negotiations are underway, this issue
always seems to take a back seat to other issues that are perceived
(incorrectly, perhaps) as more pressing.

With 53% of adults in the US reporting that a close family member has a
drinking problem, I would say that is very unfortunate- and difficult to
believe that more of your members would not relate and want to see others
getting help. But you are correct, I am not in a union environment, is it
wishful thinking that even in such an environment education on this issue
would not be beneficial in promoting social change?

Maribeth - My guess is that you're not a union environment. They fight this
tooth and nail, the irony of course being that it's really for the benefit
of their members with substance abuse issues, but they don't see it that
way.

Well then my advice to you would be to start with educating your
administration. Organizations that succeed in the long run are patient
driven, not provider driven. Share with them real scenarios that have
occurred in hospitals. The financial impact for your CFO, the reputation
impact for your CEO, and patient safety for your CNO and providers. That
changed a lot of their opinions around here when they were provided the
right education.

Don't get me wrong. I would love to have a culture like the one Maribeth
has and support it 100%. Unfortunately, being a provider driven
organization, there are different opinions on this topic within our
administration.

This is something we have been working on heavily at our organization. This
became such a problem, that I actually just hired an RN that serves as our
diversion and substance abuse coordinator within employee health. The Mayo
Clinic offers a lot of useful tools if you are beginning. To be quite
honest, I am surprised at some of the questions you pose- to me, everything
is about patient safety. It shouldn't even be asked if an on-call person
should be allowed to drink. My answers below in red and my policy attached.

My facility is in the process of updating our Substance Abuse Policy. I was
wondering if any of you can share what your facility has for this topic.

Some questions that have come up during our review.

Do you allow any alcohol consumption while on duty? Absolutely not If no,
does this include lunch? Yes, never Does it apply to your sales force or for
things like contractor lunches? What about salaried employees/staff at
after hour functions at your facility? Never, ever, anyone- this sets your
culture

Do you allow alcohol on the premises for after hours events? No

Do you have a zero tolerance policy for alcohol or do you use a level that
an employee cannot be above (0.02% 0.04%) Zero tolerance

Can an on-call employee/staff drink at home when they are on-call?
Absolutely not

If it is possible, I would appreciate receiving some of the policies that
are used.
