Our criteria through the 10 UC campuses for eligibility for WorkStrong is 2 WC claims in the last 2 years. We also get one off approval for a person with 2 claims in more than 2 years and on someone who has just 1 claim but let's say they are new and seriously deconditioned/obese. Our TPA sends the eligible list, Occ Health or specialist ortho makes the referral program, Occ health or the ortho specialist makes medically clears, and they are scheduled with the on - site fitness coaches and RDs at our recreation center and encouraged to go for life coaching to the Staff and Faculty Counseling Center. It's all on their own time and the WC claim pays for these services out of ALAE. The UC actuary before beginning did projections of costs and savings and we have done way better than projected.
Think of it as focused wellness for a hot spotter group, to use group health jargon.
There was infrastructure to put in place; we have a WorkStrong coordinator in our clinic who phones and encourages the employees and manages the parts of the process day to day.

Warner: Work Strong sounds like a great program. What are the eligibility criteria, other than the employee is an injured employee (paid by WC claim in your message)? We have many older and deconditioned, injured employees at our hospital who have a hard time performing their job duties as they have gotten older and something like this would be helpful in preventing injuries/ reconditioning individuals to go back to their jobs, besides creating a more positive culture of health in our institution. What were some of the barriers UCLA faced in developing and instituting Work Strong and would you consider sharing more details about the program? Thanks, Jeff

Occupational Health at UCLA will refer our folks who quality for a program we call WorkStrong; to get personal 20 weeks of fitness coaching at the UCAL recreation centers, registered dietician 10 visits and on site Staff and Faculty Counseling Center for life coaching. Participation is voluntary and paid by the WC claim; cleared by the OM doc or specialist. Works great and not a conflict of interest but an alignment of interest as we are helping the employee get healthier and this helps them in many ways.

Hello,
I was curious if any providers offer in-person wellness consultations to their employees, regarding issues like smoking cessation, weight loss, diabetes management, etc. If so, how have you addressed potential conflicts of interest with other roles within occ health (reviewing FMLA requests, ADA accomodations, etc.)? Thanks in advance,
