[MCOH-EH] Question about requiring TB medications for employees

1. Do you refer employees with positive results for evaluation? Yes
2. Are they required to go for eval? Yes. Evaluation & consultation is
mandatory. For example, a positive (non-new hire) may continue to work if
CXR negative and no TB symptoms after providing an appointment date with
State Dept of Health/ ID. If they fail to keep appointment, they may be
removed from work until evaluation appointment addressed.
3. If treatment is recommended, does the employee have the option of
refusing treatment? Yes; after evaluated by occupational health. If they
choose treatment, we offer directly observed treatment in occupational
health.
4. If treatment is refused by the employee, are there consequences
associated with refusal? If the employee stops treatment after starting or
is non-compliant with the treatment regimen, they need evaluated by the
treating facility & occupational health. They may be temporarily removed
from work until evaluated for symptoms. The eventual result may be
refusing treatment, but after proper evaluation.

I am hoping to hear from folks who work in healthcare facilities that are
considered high risk for TB.

I am wondering how you manage employees with positive Skin or IGRA tests
(all positives not just conversions after a specific exposure) who have
received recommendations for treatment for latent TB.

Here are my questions:

1. Do you refer employees with positive results for evaluation?
2. Are they required to go for eval
3. If treatment is recommended, does the employee have the option of
refusing treatment?
4. If treatment is refused by the employee, are there consequences
associated with refusal?
Consequences could include disciplinary action, removal from duty,
termination or not allowing the employee to work in high risk areas.

I appreciate your time and feedback!

Thanks,
