Drugs Authorized for Testing Under Federal Drug Free Workplace Programs




                 The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has modified the Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs using Urine effective October 1, 2017. The revised guidelines remove the drug methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA) from the standard drug testing panel for applicant and employee drug tests.  MDEA remains a Schedule I drug, however, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may test for this drug in reasonable suspicion and post-accident tests.


                 The modified mandatory guidelines also provide agencies with authority to add the following Schedule II semi-synthetic opioids to the standard testing panel for Federal civilian applicants and employees: oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone. VA will begin testing for the added opioids on February 1, 2018.

Greetings:

We are a medical center/hospital with over 4500 employees.  We presently do pre-employment drug screening for all employees with a Rapid 5 Panel Urine Drug Test that is then sent out if anything comes back positive.  We are wondering what other organizations use for pre-employment urine drug testing?  Specifically does anyone use 10 panel screens, healthcare worker specific screens, and do you do different screens for healthcare employees (nursing, providers) versus other types of employees (ie housekeeping, nutrition services, etc.).

Any input would be appreciated.
