"General N95 Respirator Precautions

People with chronic respiratory, cardiac, or other medical conditions that make breathing difficult should check with their healthcare provider before using an N95 respirator because the N95 respirator can make it more difficult for the wearer to breathe. Some models have exhalation valves that can make breathing out easier and help reduce heat build-up. Note that N95 respirators with exhalation valves should not be used when sterile conditions must be maintained." https://www.fda.gov/medicaldevices/productsandmedicalprocedures/generalhospitaldevicesandsupplies/personalprotectiveequipment/ucm055977.htm

I am not sure if the above helps you; however, in my department, we go by those standards combined with OSHA. Once there is something noted on the respiratory questionnaire or if an employee appears to be having difficulty r/t claustrophobia or breathing, they are referred to our Occupational Health Physician for evaluation and guidance.

Thank you,

Good morning everyone,
I am reviewing our process of Hepa Mask Fit testing and PAPR usage. I am searching for detailed, evidence based information on which medical conditions would prevent the usage of the hepa mask and require PAPR usage.

The OSHA cites I have reviewed give very broad information such as heart disease, lung disease, and claustrophobia.
As you know there are several types of heart and lung disease conditions on the OSHA Medical Questionnaire. It seems it is left to the medical provider or health care professional reviewing the questionnaire to determine which type of heart or lung disease would require PAPR testing.

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi Marilyn,

The ATS has a good guide on their website:

http://www.thoracic.org/statements/resources/eoh/resp1-13.pdf

it is a bit dated, but seems to still be a good reference.
