Our Employee Health Division includes: Employee Health clinic, Employee Wellness, Fitness Center, Injury Prevention/Lift Team, Workers Compensation and Leave

We complete monthly and quarterly quality metrics for our workers compensation injuries to include overall injuries, slips and falls, patient assaults, back injuries etc. We set goals for most of our metrics.

We present annual statistics, an actuarial report and experience modification factor to our senior mgt team. Our experience modification is 0.42 and our actuarial report is very positive so senior mgt supports all our initiatives to prevent injuries which include:

· Lift Team (Safe Patient Handling Techs) to transfer complex/bariatric patients using equipment and trains clinical staff on use of ceiling lifts, hover mats, sit to stands, bariatric beds, floor lifts, etc. We have reduced back injuries by over 70% since inception and have not had work related back surgery since 2001.

· In-house management of injuries in EHS clinic.

· Quarterly WC meetings with our TPA, attorney, EHS management/nurse practitioners, Finance director to review claims and authorize settlements

· Monthly meetings with nurse practitioners, WC team and physical therapists to review open cases

· Ergonomic committee quarterly

· L.I.F.T. expert program with nurses and techs (clinical ladder provided). We have around 150 L.I.F.T. experts

· Injury Prevention Program: Physical Therapist is manager and OT (24 hrs/week) coordinates our Ergonomic Program

· Ergonomics: We allow sit stand computer workstations, OT is involved in almost all new construction for work stations, etc.

· Back in Motion Program: Award WELL Points for incentives to participate. Includes Posture session with OT or PT, Back education with PT, sessions with our Fitness Specialist on back exercise

· Post Injury Rehab: Team members report to fitness center for exercise prescription after physical therapy related to work injury

· Safety Champion Program: Give clinical ladder points, wellness incentives, quarterly raffles and Safety Champion of the year gets $500. We just started this program so we are tweaking it. We meet quarterly

Is a trap of having numerical safety goals the implication that some level of non-safety is ok, and if so, ok with who?

Dear List Serve Members,

I would appreciate hearing from you about the goals your healthcare organization sets around employee safety.
1. Does your governing board or leadership set a formal goal to address caregiver injuries in your organization?
2. If so, what is your safety goal?
3. What is the focus on employee safety in your organization?
4. What are your organization's tactics or initiatives to reduce injuries?
5. How do you measure success or movement toward your goal (besides reducing the injury rate)?

Thank you in advance for your response.
