[MCOH-EH] Alternative for sterile non-nitrile gloves

I agree with Bill – if she is reacting to a lot of different gloves, it could be that it’s simply an irritant contact dermatitis rather than an allergic contact dermatitis, and any occlusive glove would trigger the same response. If it’s an allergic reaction, she could be sensitized to a common ingredient, which is often an accelerator used in processing. Ansell Gammex Non-Latex Sensitive gloves (old name: DermaPrene Ultra) is an alternative that is accelerator-free, is sterile, and also meets criteria to work with chemotherapeutic drugs. (I have no financial interest in Ansell, FYI!)

I’ve encountered the same situation in the pharmacy. Duration of use, glove liners, and glove change frequency are all relevant considerations. We didn’t have a confirmed neoprene allergy so we were able to try Medline’s Neolon 2G and Cardinal’s Protexis gloves with some success.

I agree with Dr. Scott - reacting to all the variable gloves suggests the possibility of mechanical irritation rather than actual allergy. In the industrial setting, there are glove liners that can be worn that allow better absorption of sweat and reduce irritation. I don’t know if that kind of product is available in medical settings, and of course dexterity becomes an issue, depending on the required tasks. But it’s something worth considering.

Many times I have employees/patients who are not having true allergic reactions to gloves but to mechanical irritation to washing and donning and doffing of gloves. Skin integrity on hands is always a challenge during cold seasons as well.
Have you thought of skin hygiene and maintenance? Hand hydration and avoid irritant chemicals to the hands.

I have a pharmacy tech who works in the sterile IV room who is reacting to many of the sterile neoprene or nitrile gloves we have available. She also has a Latex allergy so we cannot use these either.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what sterile gloves we can try for her that will not cause a contact reaction to her hands.
