Subject: [MCOH-EH] Oversight of Employee Health Nurse Functions
Good morning and happy Monday!!!
I am the manager of a hospital system employee health and safety department staffed by nurses. We are currently researching options for changing the medical oversight of our department and could use your help.
Can anyone point me in the direction to determine the regulation or laws that govern the employee health and safety function for hospital employees? The nurses in our department offer the following services:
· Annual TB screenings via skin test
· Respirator fit testing
· Vaccinations
· Blood/body fluid exposure follow up
· Case management (not treatment) of workers’ compensation injuries
At this time, we have a contracted physician sign standing orders for protocols above (including emergency management of adverse reactions to injections). We are looking at options to bring this in-house under our Director of Nursing and Chief Medical Officer (neither of whom specialize in employee or occupational health services).
How do others manage their nurse run departments? Who signs your orders? Who is your resource when developing new protocols/procedures?
