Deborah,

How did you get the managers to be so diligent about enforcing this policy?

CAUTION: EXTERNAL EMAIL

Our policy is that all absences for a medical reason come through EHS for evaluation and clearance for RTW.  This includes medical absences for FMLA.  Provider notes are required for 3 days or more.  A Return to Work slip is provided to the manager by EHS after illness.   Our managers are very diligent about this.  In addition general absences (not covered by FMLA) are considered “occurrences”.  Occurrences are monitored and disciplinary action follows for “frequent flyers”.

Our policy is very similar Jen but the challenge I have is that many to not  follow the policy. Are your managers really good about holding the employees accountable to come and see/call you?

CAUTION: EXTERNAL EMAIL

Our policy states that employees that are off from work for three days or more need to make contact with employee health before returning to work.  I do not necessarily have to see the employee in person, but will need to talk to them to assess if they are able to return to work or if they need  a return to work note.

When someone is off from FMLA, they must see me in employee health before returning to work.  They have to bring in a note from the physician stating they can return to work.  I then assess to make sure they are safe to return and meet the physical demands of their job.  When someone is off on FMLA intermittently, I do not see them unless it has been 3 days or more.

Thanks,

Jen

Everyone, does anyone have policies-procedures around requiring employees to have a medical clearance visit at occupational health when off work from personal sickness or personal injury?

Does your organization approach FMLA leave differently for return to work? Intermittent versus continuous?

Do you make exceptions for certain pre-approved conditions?

Thank you.
