We have the exact process as Richard Rainey at Tampa General. We found keeping the cost in the home department get’s employees back to work or at least accommodated quicker and is a more efficient process.

At TGH, we charge them to their home cost center even if they are not working modified duty in their home cost center.  Years ago, we did charge our Employee Health cost center however we found that managers were losing sight of their own employees and they would stay on modified duty longer than they really should have.  Keeping their payroll costs on their home cost center gives the manager more of an incentive to accommodate them while on modified duty in their own department.  We have seen that our modified duty times have decreased by returning team members back to full duty quicker by doing this practice.

For those of you who oversee an Early Return to work Program for your Workers’ Comp claims, do you have a separate cost center that their time and attendance comes from?  Do any of you have time and attendance come from an Employee Health budget while on light duty?  If yes, what are the criteria for moving them in and out of your cost center?
