I would agree that we let them fill out a L&I form if they get prophylaxed, and last year we had a proficiency testing fiasco and our lab staff were exposed to Brucella, so had to take Doxycycline prophylactically and the medication made staff sick to their stomachs, so if they vomited they had to leave work, and they tried to claim that loss of time on the forms. I am not sure if they got it covered, but if we hadn’t filled out a form for all those exposed they would not have had the option when they reacted to the prophylaxis meds.

I had a call with Cal/Osha last year regarding this topic and they told me that because medications are prescribed it meets the criteria and should be recorded.

Pertussis or Meningitis Exposure

If treated with Prophylaxis we do not report to W/C or OSHA

If they get sick then we would report to W/C and add to the OHSA log

Hello,

Can you please tell me how you would handle a pertussis or Meningitis exposure.

If the employees are treated with prophylaxis, would you report to W/C?  Or go on OSHA log as recordable?

Thank you in advance,

Cathreen
