We started doing color vision screening after housekeeping came to us about a process that requires pH strip testing for a cleaning chemical. We screened all housekeepers, and those that failed screening went through a field test conducted by the manager.

But, we decided at that time to do color vision screening on all pre-employment exams, not as a criteria for hiring but as a baseline. As you noted, Tara, it occurred to us that there are a lot of jobs that use color vision but color vision is not listed as a requirement. We understand that this is not definitive testing or diagnosis, and if anyone doesn’t meet the threshold (using the limited Ishihara style spots on the Titmus machine, must get 6/8 correct), and color vision is documented as necessary, that individual will be referred for full color vision evaluation if indicated.

I screen all my staff because so many things are color coded you never know who may be colorblind.. but not everyone has time for that. I do believe I was required for nursing and Lab for sure to be tested as they had to answer questions about color in testing lab test and other nursing duties.

How do you determine which departments get screened?

Employee health performs the test.  We simply use the standard book.  We son’t have a policy, and we only test for certain departments.

Hello all,

1)            How do you approach color vision testing of employees and who administers the tests?

2)            What kind of Quality Assurance is required on results?

3)            How do you handle reporting of failed tests to supervisors, both procedurally, and with respect to the implications on employees’ personal health information being shared with supervisors?

4)            Are these employees given accommodation if necessary?

5)            Care to share your policy?

Thank you for your time and any input you provide.
