Subject: [EXTERNAL] [MCOH-EH] Factsheet | Take Action to Address the Worldwide Shortage of Respirators and Face Protection for COVID-19 Response

Dear MCOH/EH Heroes,

Sharing this factsheet that you can use with your networks if you think it would be helpful mobilizing acquisition and use of respiratory and face protection.

The factsheet details the science issues in plain language, describing why respiratory and face protection is critically important for protecting healthcare personnel from exposures to SARS-CoV-2 when evaluating patients that are suspected or known to have COVID-19. It is urgent to address the shortages. The factsheet also discusses the issues of reuse of respiratory protection, when that becomes necessary.

The factsheet was written by several experts in the field of occupational health and safety, infectious disease, and epidemiology. This document is designed to be adapted to be applicable to your needs. Since this document is copyrighted, if you would like to edit/revise this document, please let me know so I can send you the Word version and help you facilitate those changes.

We also encourage you to take advantage of the comprehensive NIEHS Worker Training Program awareness level training tool for COVID-19. COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning much about it, including how it spreads. This Training Tool is designed to aid in the development of awareness-level courses for workers in a broad array of industries and will be updated with new information as the situation evolves.

The fundamental solution to the lack of respirators and other PPE requires government action to increase production. However, in the short term it is important to mobilize to get people to donate their supplies of respirators and PPE.

Stay well,

Amber
