CDC is supposed to have a smart phone app, called v-safe, for monitoring but I don't know whether that will be up and running and how we would get these results locally.  Are your organizations planning to do active surveillance for symptoms or health impacts after vaccination?

On the ACIP call just now, they announced CDC will be releasing specific guidance for management of post vaccination side effects “soon” and will share it “before the first dose is given” which is kind of late IMO!

Right now and subject to change, we’re planning to manage generalized symptoms in the 3 days after vaccination differently, not requiring testing unless they have had an exposure or they also have a more specific symptom (respiratory symptoms, anosmia, etc)

This guidance really needs to be available before people plan and schedule their vaccination time, and we’ll encourage people to schedule their vaccination at a time they can be off work or at least not in a highly demanding role for a couple of days after the vaccine. Also so that entire workgroups don’t all get vaccinated on the same day.

Also consider people who are on a post exposure quarantine. Some HCP might be working if there’s a critical staffing need, but if they have any symptom it would be more concerning than the person without any recent exposure. Probably need to advise people to wait until their quarantine period is over before they get vaccinated.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [MCOH-EH] Planning for COVID vaccine side effects?

Good afternoon everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has been planning on managing side effects after COVID vaccine, including low grade fever, etc.?

Specifically, given that side effects are similar to symptoms of COVID infection, might post vaccine COVID testing be indicated?

Thank you,

Craig Thorne
