Good afternoon Megan.

 

Our employee BFE evaluations are done utilizing the Occupational Health protocol that includes asking for information necessary to complete the evaluation and cover requirements for the sharps injury log.  Most data collection after hours is done by the hospital nursing supervisor who is considered part of the Occupational Health Department for the purposes of these evaluations. 

 

All evaluations done in the ED are followed in Occupational Health.  We have standard source and exposed lab panels.  When these are ordered in our electronic health record, a formal referral is generated to Occupational Health to manage follow-up.  Because any lab testing is done with the Medical Director of Occupational Health as the ordering physician, and the employee is referred to Occupational Health we have not asked for a separate consent to share information from the ED.  Employee exposures typically involve sources who are registered patients.  Sources consent to testing and sharing necessary medical information with Occupational Health.

 

For exposures of non-employees we have variations on this process.

For those organizations that have the ED manager their after-hours BBP exposures, do you obtain consent from the source patient to review their record for the lab results the next business day? If you do obtain consent, is the ED obtaining that consent?
