Med Center Peers-

My staff just alerted me to a situation that I should have thought about. Some of our ER staff are fitted with full face masks for use in a contamination situation. We are fairly rural and there are a lot of fertilizer plants and similar places around here, so it is a rare but necessary need.

During this year’s round of fittings, my staff realized that some of the employees could not be fitted while wearing vision correction spectacles. In the past they had been fitted without the spectacles, which I was not aware. But it is unrealistic to expect someone requiring glasses to not wear them when wearing any kind of respirator.

Have any of you dealt with this, and what was your solution? Off the top of my head, I can think of the BCGs (Birth Control Glasses) that we wore in the military to serve this purpose, but that will be a large purchase by the hospital to get those for everyone who needs it. Any other options to consider?

Thanks,

David
