If they can not provide titers or vaccines we would titer them.  That is what we do for all our new caregivers. If they do not have their immunization records, we titer them and then vaccinate accordingly.  If they cannot take a vaccine we do make them aware of the incubation time for each illness and that they would be off work during that time if they are not immune and decline the vaccine.

We do give them a Tdap if they can not provide a current one.

Can I pose the following question please?

What are other children’s hospitals policy or accommodation protocols for pre-hires in the following situation?

  • Health care giver in Medical Center
  • Patient facing
  • Cannot provide positive titers or CDC appropriate vaccinations for MMR and/or Varicella for Medical Reasons

Are they allowed to work with patients?

Would you provide an accommodation or not hire the pre-hire?

IF you would provide accommodation: What accommodations would you require the new employee to follow to protect the patients from these highly communicable diseases?
