We do pre-placement health assessments performed by an RN who does very focused assessments based on the physical demands of the job and someone’s focused medical questionnaire. We are most concerned with
people with Musculoskeletal signs and symptoms and diseases, going into a physically demanding position or someone with significant autoimmune conditions or on an immunosuppressant medication to ensure that we can maximize their safety in the environment
and minimize future liability to the employer.
Our RN’s are backed up by NP’s. We find that these exams uncover many risk factors for unsafe situations that we wouldn’t want to support. All of our evaluations are post-hire and are therefore pre-placement.
The outcome of our evaluations results in an accommodation request. This often can get resolved OR can get accommodated or necessitates a change in job title.
Our preplacement process plus a number of other factors have allowed our workers comp costs per 100 dollars of payroll to be some of the very lowest in the State.

I have worked at three different organizations for the past 12 years and not one of these hospitals did we do physicals. We call it a New Hire Screening and we do the very things you list in your post.

Has anyone stopped doing physicals for new hires (other than below)?
We are considering doing a brief questionnaire, titers, immunizations, UDS, color vision for those doing POCT, respirator clearance,

There may be state requirements for some, but is anyone aware of a federal requirement to do more?
Thank you
