Angeli-
At both of the medical organizations at which I have worked (Nebraska and now NH0, registered nurses have been considered to meet the intent of PLHCP. Currently, we have the
employee health nurses review the respiratory clearance form. If all responses are negative or non-relevant (e.g. taking meds for HTN is not an issue with N-95 respirators), the nurses sign. If any issues are identified that require clarification, the nurse
may still talk to the candidate, and the form is then forwarded to one of our providers to review and either sign or recommend a direct physical exam.
The inclusion of RNs as PLHCP is, in my experience, a state statute issue. If your state includes RNs in the definition of licensed medical professionals, then they meet this
intent and you could choose to follow this pattern. So I suggest you check either with your state’s nursing licensing authority or with your organizations OGC if you are uncertain about this designation – just to be safe.

How did the organizations you worked with handle Respiratory Clearance before a fit test? If the form was not evaluated by a physician, who was identified as a PLHCP? My interpretation
is that an advanced practice provider (NP or PA) could be that person but an RN could not…I’d love to be wrong.
Kindly,

Has anyone stopped doing physicals for new hires (other than below)?
We are considering doing a brief questionnaire, titers, immunizations, UDS, color vision for those doing POCT, respirator clearance,

There may be state requirements for some, but is anyone aware of a federal requirement to do more?
