Hello,

We identified it as the Employee Health RN and have a signed SOP by our CMO. RNs are licensed registered nursing providers.

Our RNs know how to inquire for more information and when a referral is needed usually if the three yes answers. Or, if the employee has had an acute situation within the last year. Most who answer yes declare they have a well-managed chronic condition. If there is any question regarding the answer, the RN makes a referral. Very rarely do we have someone who needs to be seen. However, it does happen, and we do have a few employees who are not allowed to wear an disposable N95 but may where the CAPR aka MaxAir hood. I think in my 35 years of nursing, I have only seen less than a handful of employees who could not under any circumstance wear an N95 or Respirator of any kind. When this happens, we look in to how we can accommodate the employees' job duties or if we need to transition them elsewhere to work as to not place them in a situation requiring this level of PPE.

Best Wishes, Stay Safe, and May you Prosper,

Amy –

How did the organizations you worked with handle Respiratory Clearance before a fit test? If the form was not evaluated by a physician, who was identified as a PLHCP? My interpretation is that an advanced practice provider (NP or PA) could be that person but an RN could not…I’d love to be wrong.

  • The employer must identify a physician or other licensed health care professional (PLHCP) to perform all medical evaluations using the medical questionnaire in Appendix C of the Respiratory Protection standard or a medical examination that obtains the same information.
  • The employer must ensure that a followup medical examination is provided for any employee who gives a positive response to any question among questions 1 through 8 in Part A Section 2, of Appendix C, or whose initial medical examination demonstrates the need for a follow-up medical examination. The employer must provide the employee with an opportunity to discuss the questionnaire and examination results with the PLHCP.

Kindly,
Angeli

I have worked at three different organizations for the past 12 years and not one of these hospitals did we do physicals. We call it a New Hire Screening and we do the very things you list in your post. Amy Olson COHN-S, MS, RN Director- Occupational

Has anyone stopped doing physicals for new hires (other than below)? We are considering doing a brief questionnaire, titers, immunizations, UDS, color vision for those doing POCT, respirator clearance, and fit testing There may be state requirements

There may be state requirements for some, but is anyone aware of a federal requirement to do more?

Thank you
