[CASL-L] School policy on personal electronic devices

Aren't we supposed to prepare students for appropriate use in the real world?

Today, Kindles are very popular and articles have been written about how young
people have embraced this tool and others to read more than ever. School and
university libraries are purchasing eReaders, iPads and using Smartphones as an
instructional tool. I am a bit confused, though, since I can access the internet
on the iPad and iPhone just as easily as the Kindle?

Some districts have embraced a BYOD policy (bring your own device) as a cost
saver as well as recognizing the prevalence of these electronic devices in our
culture and around the world today.

Subject: [CASL-L] School policy on personal electronic devices

Hi All -

We had an inquiry today as to whether a student could bring her personal
Kindle to school (we are a 6-8 Intermediate School). While my principal
generally endorses new technologies, he is concerned in general about
students accessing the internet via personal electronics devices. Much of
the newer equipment will enable internet access without using our school
wifi. In looking at the big picture, it's one thing to read a book on a
Nook, it's entirely different if a student uses an ipad or iphone to read
books.

I'm wondering if there are any schools who have successfully (or not)
addressed this issue, and what are your thoughts. I am not questioning the
validity and use of e-readers, the issue is the personal internet access
usage via these devices.

Thank you -
