[CASL-L] FW: Interesting Question

I totally agree.  I read the book and I have a friend who encourages all boys to read it.  Besides the sports aspect, there is the very serious issue of testicular cancer and the beginning stages of it.  Regardless of his current accusations, Lance walked us through his journey with cancer and subsequent good health.  All boys should know the symptoms of this disease that usually hits between 18 and 27.

Excellent point, and good examples, especially when it's a subject who has been ACCUSED of doing something illegal as opposed to convicted.

I think it is a slippery slope when we as librarians start pulling books off of shelves based on our personal feelings about a subject.  Although Lance Armstrong has been stripped of his medals, it doesn't negate the fact that he is in fact a cancer survivor (and to my knowledge he has not admitted to steroid use).  If someone famous has done something bad or been accused of something illegal, do those actions overshadow what made them biography-worthy in the first place?

The biography shelves would be sparse - in addition to Lance Armstrong we'd have to pull Michael Jackson, Michael Vick, Whitney Houston, Mark McGwire, Roger Clemons, Tiger Woods, the list goes on and on of celebrities and sports figures.

Just my two cents!  :-)

I should clarify Geri -- The biography is an inspirational memoir about his recovery from cancer -- the inspirational aspect is drawn largely from his accomplishments as a competitive cyclist --hence the correlation with the performance enhancing drugs --

Unless there is an assertion that the use of performance-enhancements is linked to cancer survival, I don't see the correlation.

Good Morning Librarians -

I am debating removing from our collection this title: Lance Armstrong: My Journey Back to Life.

I would welcome a discussion about the pros/cons of removing from the shelves this book about Lance Armstrong's triumph over cancer given that he was recently stripped of all of his medals for using performance enhancing drugs during this same time. Any thoughts?

Kristie
