[CASL-L] Upcoming Fall Educator Workshop - Fairfield Museum & History Center

The Fairfield Museum & History Center's upcoming exhibition, Promise of Freedom, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The exhibition is a unique opportunity for your students to view firsthand one of the most pivotal documents in American history, a Lincoln-signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation and 13th Amendment. Outreach programs and Professional Development workshops are available that integrate Common Core and state curriculum with inquiry-based learning.

They will be offering a Fall Educator Workshop on October 3rd, which includes a Teaching with Primary Sources Workshop with Tom Thurston, Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University and Alan Marcus, author of Teaching History in Museums and Associate Professor at UCONN Neag School of Education.

Promise of Freedom: The Emancipation Proclamation

September 23 - February 24, 2013
Promise of Freedom commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with an exhibition and programs that explores the American ideals of freedom and equality and how these principles have been tested over time.

The exhibition features a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln, a copy of the 13th Amendment,  rare slavery artifacts, prints and political cartoons that illuminate the public opinion of Lincoln in the 1860s, from an evil instigator to heroic savior. Discover Fairfield’s role in the history of slavery and meet former slaves and slave owners from Fairfield, soldiers who fought in the Civil War and politicians who sought to send the slaves back to Africa.
