Excel 2010 Pt.1 & Pt.2 - Nov. 2nd (Pt.1) and Nov. 9th (Pt.2) (MLSC)
This series of two full-day classes will bring you from novice to advanced professional.

Participants are expected to attend both sessions.
Topics include:

Part 1: November 2, 2012
Entering numbers and text into cells
Creating simple formulas
Using functions
Using the fill handle
Formatting sheets for printing

Part 2: November 9, 2012
Creating advanced functions
Naming cells and ranges
Developing formulas using named cells and ranges
Using 3-D functions to calculate across worksheets
Defining absolute and relative references
Creating elapsed time/day formulas

Records Management Essentials For Public Libraries & Library Associations - Nov. 7th (MLSC)
The Office of the Public Records Administrator is responsible for developing and directing a records management program for Connecticut's municipalities and state agencies within the executive branch. This office publishes retention schedules/disposition schedules, approves disposition authorizations, provides training and conducts inspections to ensure compliance with public records statutes and regulations. In this workshop, you will learn about your institution's records management responsibilities and your own responsibilities. Topics include basic concepts of records management such as records retention and disposition and best practices for managing email and electronic records.

Downloadable Audio Books - Nov. 13th (Avon PL)
Join Eric Hansen, iCONN's Electronic Resources Coordinator, as he discusses and demonstrates iCONN's Downloadable Audiobooks collection. Eric will discuss how the service is funded, how new titles are selected, and how statistics are reported. He will demonstrate searching, placing holds, checking out, downloading, and playing an audio book, and he will demonstrate transfer of an audio book from a computer to an iPod. He will also discuss access to the service with wireless devices. There will be ample time for guided hands-on practice by participants of every part of Eric's demonstration. Participants are encouraged to bring in their iPhones, iPads, and Android devices for practice in accessing the service wirelessly.

Your Library, Your Town: Data You Need To Know - Nov. 16th (MLSC)
This half-day workshop is an overview of census, and federal and state agency data available to librarians and media specialists interested in planning programs for their community, and answering reference questions about their communities. In this hands-on workshop we will learn how to access community data to better serve our library patrons. Looking at this data can help us learn the answers to these questions and others:

How many cars drive past your library each day?
How many students in your area are not fluent in English?
Is your town mill rate changing
Any black bear sitings in your area?
What were your towns election results for the last municipal elections?
Any hazardous waste sites in your town?
Our workshop leader will be Nancy Peluso, Federal Documents Librarian at the Connecticut State Library. She is an experienced reference librarian and conducts hands-on workshops on federal and state agency websites, as well as navigating census.gov, for librarians across the state.

Intermediate WordPress - Nov. 28th (WLSC)
In the basic "WordPress as a Content Management System" workshop you learned how to create Pages to display static content, use Posts to create a news page, select themes to make your site look great and
use widgets to create a sidebar of content for your library site.

In this session you'll learn much more about managing your own
installation of WordPress and customizing your library's WordPress
based web site.

Topics will include:
Tips on keeping your site secure and well maintained.
Using the file editor to make minor edits to theme files.
Customizing CSS to make simple changes to site.
Great plugins that add great features to WordPress.
New WordPress features including the Custom Menus options.
Finding & installing themes and plugins
How to work with Child Themes

Office 2010: Making the Transition in Word & Excel  - Nov. 28th (Danbury PL)
Have you been using Word and Excel 2003 or 2007? In this half-day hands-on workshop, you will have to opportunity to explore the latest features in both Word 2010 and Excel 2010 and become a more proficient user. The workshop will explore Microsoft's current user interface, including adding to the Quick Access Toolbar and pinning frequently used documents. You'll learn where Microsoft put all of your favorite dialog boxes. In Word we'll show you how to reset defaults as well as how to use them to your advantage. We'll also explore how the table feature has been enhanced. In Excel we'll delve into some of the favorite sorting, filtering and function features and explore the table feature. If we have time we'll marvel at the power of pivot tables.

Tech Tools Update - Nov. 29th (MLSC)
Need a chance to catch up with the ever-changing stream of new (and not so news) tech tools? There's always something new that sounds interesting, fun and maybe even useful! But sometimes it's hard to find time to test them out and figure out what to do with them.

During this workshop we'll look at social media services that can help you connect with your community, as well as productivity tools that can help you during your workday. You'll have a chance to explore lots of tools (new and old!) and share ideas with your colleagues. You'll come away with some new tips and tricks in your tool-kit and and decide which tools are right for you, your library, your community. Topics covered will include: Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other electronic elements (QR codes, cloud computing, etc.) No question is too silly, bring them all!!

OCLC: Energize Your Base: Tips & Tools to Raise Awareness & Build Support - Nov. 14th (Online)
A webinar exploring ways to increase your community's awareness of library services and of how those services are changing lives.
We know that libraries are a good investment but with tight budgets, we need to energize our base - to take action to connect more strongly with community members, to find out what excites them, and to let them know how libraries are changing lives - one connection at a time. Our panel will explore three vehicles that can help you increase awareness of library services:

Library Videos - New videos from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that showcase work done in libraries which are transforming lives, by changing the way we connect.
Geek the Library - A community awareness campaign offered free to libraries to help strengthen community connections and library support.
Data Visualization - We collect lots of data. Learn how the Colorado State Library is helping local libraries use their data to tell a story about impact.
