Our H.S. also has a Mentor/Mentee program, called ADVISORY, which now meetings twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays between our Block 1 and 2. Similar to CROMWELL's modified schedule, our schedule is shortened on those tuesdays to allow for 30 mintues meeting time for this ADVISORY.
In our district, they applied for a grant and a small group of teachers was paid a stipend during the summer to create a year-long series of topics/lessons/activities for every grade. Sometimes multiple grades do the lessons, and sometimes the lessons are grade specific to focus on something specific for that grade.
Ours started out three years ago as once a month with every Principal/Guidance/Teacher involved as an "Advisor" but last summer they modified it to more meetings per month and pulled out the Administrators and School Counseling Staff. The scheduled was changed to more meetings per month. The thought was these staff could not be committed to weekly meetings so they would visit different advisories or grades for some of the meetings.
The goal is to have weekly advisories but that is still under negotiation.
We stay with our students through their years in H.S. So, my advisory group of 11 students has basically had 9 of them with me since their freshman year. As some students transfer in or out, I have lost or gained students in my advisory.
Periodically we survey the students as to whether or not they feel they can talk to a significant adult in the H.S., etc.

Subject: [CASL-L] Small student groups
This is an off-topic question. Our middle school is trying to have a small group (15-20 students) of students meet once a month with a staff member as an informal type of advisory group. Do any of your schools do something similar, and if so, what type of activities do you do in those groups. Also, how often do those groups meet.
Thanks in advance for your help!
