[CASL-L] Paperbacks in the library

I'm in a preK-4 school and inherited a lot of paperbacks. As chapter books, they are fine on the shelves. If I buy new, I buy the Kapco covers, which makes them sturdier. I also group series in plastic tubs, to save shelf space. I don't like PB picture books, because the spine is too narrow to see the call number. So those I have in baskets, alphabetically by author, with a large letter on the front for the author's last name. As for non fiction, it depends. I don't use them if they are too narrow to see the call number. Up until now I have had a full time aide, and she covers paperbacks with laminate. I'd never have time for that myself.

I work in a 2 year old pre-K - 8 school that did not come from an existing school. My library is huge and severely under-stocked. My budget is so limited that I had to purchase paperback books at the beginning of the year. I have also accepted many donations (which will fall apart very quickly).

My shelves are not full, the books fall over and the paperbacks get lost in the shelving. I am thinking of making an entire section of the library "paperbacks only". Does anyone else have paperbacks in the library? Any and all ideas / suggestions are welcome!
