Troll Wood
Illustrated by Paul Hess. 2013. 32pp. Price 17.99 hc. Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. 978-1-84780-238-5. Grades PreK–2
This story captures the adventure of a family as they go through the mysterious Troll Wood looking for a new home. Each page guides the family to a place

where no one has dared to go; as they find each unexplored place, the family takes on each challenge bravely. This picture book could be used to facilitate a

discussion of wondering and inquiry. Each page contains colorful illustrations and text that is reflective of a “Bear Hunt” type adventure. Choral responses

are included in the text which makes for an engaging read-aloud. Barbara Johnson, Technology Resource Teacher, Colchester (Connecticut) Public Schools
ADDITIONAL SELECTION

Creatures of Fantasy
Dragons. 978-0-7614-4920-1
Griffins and Phoenixes. 978-0-7614-4923-2
Mermaids. 978-0-7614-4924-9
Sphinxes and Centaurs. 978-0-7614-4927-0
Unicorns. 978-0-7614-4928-7
Water Monsters. 978-0-7614-4926-3
2014. 64pp. ea. Price 34.21 ea. lb. Cavendish Square. Grades 4–8
The titles in this series contain an impressive amount of information but they lacked cohesion. The scope is worldwide and historical; discussion of the

possible origins of the creatures and whether fossils or living animals might be behind the myths are included. Frequent quotations from literature, myths,

and primary sources greatly enhance the text. The abundant illustrations are equally captivating, but the lack of specific source information is unfortunate.

Pronunciation guides would be useful and maps and timelines would also help. Even so, students who are interested in fantasy creatures will enjoy these.
