[CASL-L] Confidentiality about listserv posts

We all know that once something gets posted, we have little control over who sees our post, even on a moderated, member-only listserv like the CASL listserv. However, in order for this listserv to work for its members, we do need to be professional about the information we share and violating our members' attempts at confidentiality.

We recently had a post about a potential author visit. None of us want to bring an author to our school without doing due diligence, and a listserv member asked for feedback on a particular author. Several listserv members replied that they wouldn't recommend this author, for valid reasons. One of the responses was a reply to the entire listserv, not just to the member who had the original post.

This particular author doesn't belong to our listserv, but she not only was notified about the concerns voiced about her, but then contacted the person who made the original post and the person who had replied to the entire listserv. Both of these listserv members then had to have difficult conversations with this author. The only way this author would have received this information would be if someone on the listserv shared it with her.

Please respect the confidentiality of our listserv. We want our listserv members to feel that anything they post on the listserv will not be shared outside of this listserv without their permission. This listserv is a wonderful resource for us all, and it's important that we all feel comfortable posting to it. We have over 400 members, and we want to keep this listserv functioning as something all can use.

What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it feels about education.
