[CASL-L] TRAILS Assessment

I used it a lot last year with 3 different classes. I used the same class code for each student and divided it up by the assessments I used.

I found that the questions were pretty rigorous at points and a little repetitive. If they have no experience with advance search strategies it can generate lots of disappointment. I tended to use the individual assessments more- like Develop Topic etc. and created another class code and used the same assessment as a pre and a post. It seemed easier to manage at the time.

I kept the spread sheets with the codes and did the cut-up strips for students (with a master copy for teacher).

It worked well for the SLO in TEVAL.  

Also, look at the different grade levels- I was able to use different grade levels for the assessments and explained my rationale in the SLOs by connecting to lower DRP scores and by a blanket statement that an intentional research process (with me) is not YET a 'common research experience' for all here.

The next time I use it, I may shuffle up some of the questions from various assessments to target specific areas we go over in class. 

I found it useful, but sometimes rather frustrating and awkward to manage at times.

I assign codes in advance, under create a new session. You can print them out and write the student name on the line. I then make copies, so that the student uses the same code for any assessment I assign. If I want a pre and post, I use General Assessment 1 for the pre and General Assessment 2 for the post (at the appropriate grade level).

If you have one session, how do you see if they improved  on an individual basis?  Make sure they write name and homeroom on form , so  you know what number they used. Usually, there are two general  assessments that you can use one as a pretest and the other as post test.

For those of you who give the TRAILS assessment, can I open a session for all of the ninth grade and leave it open until I have met with all of the classes?  Or do I need to create a separate session for each class of 25 students or so that take it?  I want to create one large session, so that if I decide to retest them again as Juniors, I can retest them using the same id numbers even though they will be mixed up into different classes.
