[CASL-L] High School Writing Centers

We have a literacy lab at Southington High. Staffed by an English teacher each period. It's used as a place to make up English assignments, and students can visit any time for help on any English assignment and college essays too. It is a small space within the library ( with a door) and we allow anyone to use the space to make up any quiz or test. It seems to work fairly well. We have chronic shortages of subs and teachers can be pulled for coverage elsewhere.

I know EOSmith HS has one in their library. My son took a course for credit and now works there. You could reach out to them...I believe a social studies teacher is the one who coordinates it.

I like this idea a lot. I have been giving some thought to having a Writing Center in my library. We just went one to one with Chromebooks so I can really put it almost anywhere in the room. I would be interested in hearing how it works logistically in other schools. We are a small school so we may use a combination of English teachers and Honor Society students.

Hello,

Do any of you participate in the running of your HS Writing Center? We are looking to create a student-run writing center and create a course to train peer tutors. So far, my contribution has been creating a web presence on the library site and investigating online sources. I'd love to know how else I might be of use and I'm hoping you can give me some ideas!

Best,

Monica
