Jodie—

I am in the exact same position, fairly new to High School level, in a district that has gone 1:1 since I arrived, with a huge library space in need of renovations. We took out many of the desktops once the laptops were distributed and this has freed up a lot of space. Classes rarely come to the MC now, but I encourage them to come when they want students to spread out and work. We would love to see more flexible seating, furniture that allows students to charge their devices, and some glassed-in conference rooms for tutoring or quiet, focused study. We have also added a MakerLab devoted to the creation of media of all kinds.

I would love to see some updated Media Centers at either high schools or colleges that would inspire our transformation. Good luck with your new position!

Subject: [CASL-L] High School Media Center Renovation

This morning I was asked to present ideas to the Superintendent for a “sketch and roll-out plan for what your vision would be for the physical layout of the library media center over the next 2-years”. We are starting a 1-to1 Chromebook initiative beginning in February which will free up space once we move out the 24 desktops. This has inspired Administration to update the Media Center and make it more of a Learn Commons.

I have only been at the high school level for 2 ½ months, as this is a new position for me. I have some definite ideas in mind, but I am reaching out to my fellow CASL members for help/advice in planning. I’d love to hear back on ideas that you feel I should definitely consider including.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can provide,
