[CASL-L] Library Tech Question

Hey there,

I have used both chromebooks and macbooks in the media center/schools. I
personally like chromebooks better for the kids since they are so easy to
use. Students only have to log in once and everything they do on the
computer is linked to their Google accounts. On Macbooks (if you are using
Google accounts), students have to log into the computer, then log in again
to Google chrome and sign in using their full email addresses, instead of
their shortnames. It's a lot of extra typing and steps for the kids. The
pros to macbooks is that there are a lot of awesome Apple apps (ie iMovie,
Garageband) that you can use for projects in class. Chromebooks have tons
of apps and extensions you can download from the Google store.

As for teachers, I don't think that chromebooks are the best choice. If you
are using an Interactive board (smartboard, promethean board, etc.), since
chromebooks don't have a hard drive you can't download the software to be
able to use the boards properly. We had a teacher's macbook break and they
replaced it with a chromebook and now she can only use her board as a
projector, since we can't download the software to the chromebook. Also for
that same reason we can't access Gradebook on Chromebooks.

Hope this helps!

Lauren
