[CASL-L] Khan Academy: Compliancy Pledged

Good morning,

Following some extremely productive conversations with the Khan Academy team, I am happy to share that the organization has developed a Data Protection Agreement (DPA) that appears to meet all of the contractual requirements of Connecticut student data privacy law (CGS 10-234aa - dd<https://www.cga.ct.gov/current/pub/chap_170.htm#sec_10-234aa>). To convey their compliance with the law, Khan Academy has signed the Connecticut Student Data Privacy Pledge through the Educational Software Hub, where they have posted instructions for districts on how to use the DPA:

https://ctedtech.app.learntrials.com/new/organizations/157848/organization_tools/17231/details/overview

Please note the following important details from Khan Academy regarding district agreements and usage protocols:

Khan Academy's practice is to enter into Data Protection Agreements at the school district level, rather than at the individual teacher or school level. Also, it is important that Student User accounts be established in the manner described in Khan Academy's Data Protection Agreement, so that Khan Academy can recognize them as CT Student User accounts. In particular, user accounts should be established using a school email address (rather than a personal email address), and associated with a class on Khan Academy.

The posted agreement includes an instruction sheet that:

* Asks educators to check to ensure that that their school district has entered into the Khan Academy Data Protection Agreement; and

* Emphasizes that Student User accounts need to be established in the manner described in Khan Academy's Data Protection Agreement, so that they are recognized as CT Student User accounts.

Instructions are also provided for districts:

* The Khan Academy Data Protection Agreement can be printed, with brief details filled in, signed and returned.

* Completed Agreements can be sent to Khan Academy by email to the School Partnerships team, at the email address provided in the instructions, and we will return a countersigned copy.

Again, you may access instructions for executing the DPA, as well as the addendum itself, through the link above.

Regards,

Doug
