[CASL-L] Capstone

Hi Tenley—

At GMHS, our Capstone class is a graduation requirement. It is typically a semester-long class for seniors, for a letter grade, taught by teachers from various departments. The students must write an academic paper, have an interview with an outside expert, and make a public presentation on a topic of their choosing. I visit the classes and teach lessons on conducting an advanced keyword search and searching for peer-reviewed academic journal articles, as well as approving the students’ topics and vetting their sources. We also offer AP Capstone, a series of courses designed by the College Board.

Good luck! I find that Capstone classes are a great way to boost our circulation and for me to teach upper-level research. The students really benefit from the opportunity to make connections (possibly in the career field they will enter) with professionals, from the communication skills they develop, and from the rigor of writing an academic paper before they leave for college or career.

Hi everyone,

I asked my principal about Capstone projects today, and I think I opened up a gigantic can of worms.  Now I'm looking for advice on how other school districts handle it.  If your school has a Capstone I'd love any information you'd be willing to share.  I'm looking for specific on the following:

* What grade level is it done in?
* Half year or full year?
* Does it count as a grade?
* What is your role with the project as an LMS?
* How are teachers involved?
* How is it presented at the end? (small group, science fair-style, community event?...)
