[CASL-L] Capstone

Here in East Hampton, all seniors complete a Capstone project as a graduation requirement. Currently (and for the last few years) we’ve been working on it via English classes with a culminating expo in the spring; the school and community are invited to that and it is set up science-fair style. Next year, though, we’re rolling out a half year Capstone course that students will use to fulfill part of their English requirement as well as complete their Capstone project. I collaborate closely with the English teachers on many aspects of the project, including research and creating annotated bibliographies. We don’t require a formal research paper as part of ours, so the annotated bib is where they show that they’ve thought critically about their topic and the sources they chose. I’d be happy to chat more with you about our program. We got a lot of good ideas from Mike Mal at Bacon Academy; they have a great program there!

Subject: [CASL-L] Capstone

Hi everyone,

I asked my principal about Capstone projects today, and I think I opened up a gigantic can of worms. Now I'm looking for advice on how other school districts handle it. If your school has a Capstone I'd love any information you'd be willing to share. I'm looking for specific on the following:

* What grade level is it done in?
* Half year or full year?
* Does it count as a grade?
* What is your role with the project as an LMS?
* How are teachers involved?
* How is it presented at the end? (small group, science fair-style, community event?...)

Feel free to email me off list. I appreciate your help!
Tenley

“The best way to measure how much you've grown isn't by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even your grade point average-- though those things are important, to be sure. It's what you've done with your time, how you've chosen to spend your days, and whom you've touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.” - R.J. Palacio, Wonder
