[CASL-L] Note-taking Lessons/ Strategies

I have a variety of note-taking organizers that I tweak for different purposes and ecourage students to use them.

I used modified Cornell notes as a English teacher in New Haven for years- I put a few questions down in the left column, and had students write their answers on the right side. It worked for Macbeth, and all of the teachers in Family & Consumer Sci and Tech Ed are using Cornell here this year. They are really happy with the results.

I think the basic idea is a great one- you could do a peel the onion routine with them by reading the text 3 times- aloud or silently- have them star, underline, ! or highlight what they think is important... etc. A read aloud for everyone, an overall ice breaker conversation, and then assigning chunks of the text to a smaller group is another alternative.

Take your time and encourage them to think for themselves - remind them FAIL also means First Attempt At Learning - note-taking is such an important skill!! Each time you do it, they will probably improve with the results and it won't take quite as long.

Have fun!

Yes, I used to do that type of lesson as a middle school MS, and would use the articles from Scholastic News magazines. Sometimes they had graphic organizers that went with the article for just this purpose.

Hi Everyone :)

I’m in my second year as a middle school LMS, and I’m trying to brainstorm the best ways to model/teach students to take bulleted notes. I’m thinking about finding a high interest article in our GALE database (or one pertaining to a specific topic they are focusing on in class), projecting the article on the Smart Board, reading a paragraph aloud, turning off the projector, and asking the students to write or type the important facts down in short bulleted notes, etc. I’ve found that looking away has helped to prevent plagiarism and allows students to jot down only the most important details- as they go back and forth… but I’m wondering if anyone knows of other good lessons or resources pertaining to this...

Thank you so much!

-Sarah :)
