I have an "Underground Book Club" going on in my Upper School. I started it
at the beginning of the year. It's not something that is ever formally
announced; rather, it's a club that gets offered to advisors. If an advisor
chooses to be a part of it, then we check a book out to the advisor and
everyone in the advisory. Students either choose to be a part of the
Underground Book Club or he/she immediately returns the book. A student
created a special "Underground Bookmark" for this program too. We slapped a
barcode on that bookmark and that's how we check books out to students. We
have a Google Classroom that everyone who joins is a part of, so we can see
who's already read the book and who's currently reading it.
It's a fun program, created because the typical book club we did several
years ago just didn't work with Rumsey's jam-packed schedule. (We also run
a huge book club program where usually around 35 different clubs happen on
campus at the same time just once a year.)
For this year's Underground Book Club, I have 20 books that will be in
fairly good shape at the end of the year that I'd like to donate. I figured
I'd ask MLSC if they wanted them. The book jackets will be in pristine
shape, since we removed them to make the books even more "Undergroundish!"
This year's book is Alex London's *Black Wings Beating, *everyone has loved
it so far except for one adult that I know of.
Happy reading,
~Val
