What about...

The Van Gogh Deception by Deron Hicks (not necessarily historical, but he
might like it)
Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliett  (not necessarily historical, but he might
like it)
Chasing Lincoln's Killer (DRA level 70), by James Swanson (Manhunt is the
adult version)
Chasing Kings Killer : The Hunt for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Assassin
(grades 7+) by James Swanson
"The President Has Been Shot!": The Assassination of John F. Kennedy by
James Swanson
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd
Fever 1793(medical history) by Laurie Halse Anderson

I don't think The Da Vinci Code would be appropriate (unless he is a very
advanced reader and can handle the violence, religious themes, etc).
