[CASL-L] Alternative to The Hate You Give

 Me again.
How about something by Jewell Parker Rhodes--"Black Brother, Black Brother" (bullying, race in sports, biracial brothers) or "Ghost Boys" (a boy shot and killed by police meets the ghost of Emmett Till; also a subplot about the officer's family's response)?  Both are more middle school titles.

Thank you so much to all who have taken the time to reply. I appreciate it. To clarify what I am looking for:

The larger framework for the book should revolve around social issues. Racism is a hot topic and ties in nicely with The Hate you Give, but it can really be about any relevant social issue.

I really like the book Piecing Me together. It doesn’t have any violence, language, sex... but does address the issues I am looking for. My only problem with it, is that there are really not any strong male characters..

Thus, I’m looking for a book without a lot of violence, sex, drug use, bad language... but also addresses a relevant social issue (maybe immigration?) that has both strong male and female characters.

Already considered:
All American Boys
Pride
Long Way Down
Dear Martin
American Street

Thanks again.

Are you looking for a book about racial inequity? Are you looking for a book about finding your voice? Understanding the black experience? Having a better understanding of what folks are looking for in the school system, helps me to make sure the state is purchasing pertinent material.
