The Lion of Mars by Jennifer Holm is spot-on for this grade level, and timely with Mars in the news.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is available in a variety of "for younger readers" versions:  picture book, grade 5-8ish, and adult.
See You in the Cosmos by Jack Cheng is good--lots of meat there for discussion, and an unusual (podcast trnascripts) format.
Space Case by Stuart Gibbs--murder mystery on the Moon, featuring a 12-year-old

 Hello everyone,

I would appreciate any suggestions you may have for grades 5/6 summer reading that would be of high interest related to this request (see below).  Please keep in mind that the novels and/or short stories should be a range of reading levels as many of our students may be struggling readers.  I have a few titles in mind, but wanted your suggestions and expertise as well. Thanks so much ahead of time!

"I am planning the summer STEM program for grades 5-8 this year. We are using the Novel Engineering approach which combines literacy and STEM. With each story they read, students determine a problem that the character faces. Students then use engineering skills to design and build a tool that would, hypothetically, solve a character’s problem, thus bringing the story to an alternative resolution."
