?Carrie,

I'm at a K-5 school and I've genrefied the fiction section. I'd be happy to answer any questions and offer advice. It's definitely worth the time and effort, especially when you see students find books that have previously been overlooked. They think they are finding 'new' books!

The genres I use are: Realistic, Sports, Historical, Humor, Mystery, Adventure, Science Fiction, Animals, Scary, Fantasy, Graphic Novel, and Classics.

We use Destiny and I use the sublocation feature to indicate which genre a book has been assigned. Each book also has a genre sticker on the spine (Demco has a good selection).

Sometimes the genre is clear, but some books can belong to multiple genres (re: Series of Unfortunate Events - is it humor, adventure, mystery?) The marc records in Follett sometimes indicate the genre, but not always.

Be mindful of shelf space - I had to weed a lot to make sure everything fit back on the shelves in their particular genre section.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Subject: [CASL-L] genrefying the elementary school library

Good Morning,

I am hoping to connect with librarians who have genrefied an elementary school library. I have a few questions before I make that leap in our grades 3-5 school. Let me know if you would be willing to share your experience, tips, and expertise.

Have a great week!
Carrie
