The author also conveniently leaves out that the majority (about 60%) of the books currently challenged in Texas are books with LGBTQ+ characters or themes. The "opposing balanced viewpoint" to being gay or trans is the erasure of those people.

The author of that piece leaves out the librarian’s other duty of care, access to fact-based and reliable information. Can’t call it neutral just because it gives equal weight to left vs right, that’s a false equivalency. Also, if woke means Democratic and inclusive, I’m all right with that.

Juliann, good points. As I tell my uni students, genuine diversity in children's and YA books really blossomed just about ten years ago, with We Need Diverse Books to thank for it. Before then, even if diversity was represented, it was often written by a person not a member of the group, and thus not always an accurate representation. (And hello! UB!!!!!! Congratulations.)

As the author is a fellow at a conservative think tank, his opinion is not surprising. I would argue however, that the addition of materials that he calls "woke" are just an effort to balance out materials that support his and other conservative world views that have long been part of many library collections.
