Oh, Anne, this is so disheartening. When they cut certified school
librarians in Naugatuck back in 2010, another librarian in the district and
I were cut because of least seniority. It was absolutely, truly
devastating. I remember that time well. My principal didn't want me to do
anything drastic, but I didn't have a job the following year. In the end,
Naugatuck cobbled together a part-time position among three elementary
schools. At that point, I had high school, middle school, and community
college teaching experience, but no elementary school. I was fortunate
because I found my job at Rumsey which also includes elementary teaching
(and I love it!). The following year, a principal at Naugy called to see if
I was interested in coming back because a colleague was retiring (not
because they added back positions). At that point, it was too late. I
really enjoyed being at Rumsey and my sons were attending at the time as
well.

My colleagues in Naugatuck and I tried so hard to keep all the LMS
positions back in 2010. A colleague who was a Naugatuck resident spoke at a
BOE meeting with so many facts/activities/questions about how essential
LMSs are. Seemed like BOE was in agreement; however, the positions were
still cut. They simply didn't have the money and clearly didn't feel we
were essential. As far as I know, those positions weren't ever added back.
Someone from Naugatuck can feel free to update us! Would love to hear that
they were added back.

Making sure you're aware of ALA's Advocacy Library
<https://www.ala.org/advocacy/advocacy-library> . So many resources within,
for example, Resources <https://www.ala.org/aasl/advocacy/resources>.

Reach out if you need more tools. As you know, once these positions are
gone, it's so hard to get them back. It is also disturbing to me when
people call themselves librarians when they don't have the training (LMS
state certification and/or MLS) to do this critical job.

Thinking of you and all who are worried,
~Val
